Naohiro Hohashi, PhD, RN, PHN, FAAN

Dr. Naohiro Hohashi graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, The University of Tokyo in 1989. He withdrew from the Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo in 1993 and obtained a PhD from the same university in 1995. While in graduate school he was engaged in research on oncogenes, but upon graduating he decided to move to the world of nursing. When the Department of Family Nursing, The University of Tokyo was initiated, he assumed the post of Assistant Professor. After holding the post of Lecturer (Associate Professor) at The University of Tokyo (Department of Family Nursing) and other positions, he became full professor in 2006 at the School of Medicine, Kobe University (Child and Family Health Care Nursing). Based on the government’s policy with overriding priority for graduate school in 2008 he became full professor at the Graduate School of Health Sciences, Kobe University (Division of Family Health Care Nursing). At the same time, at the Master’s Course he started the program for Certified Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Family Health Nursing, a specialty unique to Japan. He also serves as head of the Division of Nursing (Undergraduate School) and Department of Nursing (Graduate School). Underwent pediatric nurse internship at The University of Tokyo Branch Hospital, Toho University Ohashi Hospital, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and MassGeneral Hospital for Children.

Dr. Hohashi’s field of specialization is family health care nursing (particularly studies on family functioning and family signs/symptoms) and pediatric nursing. Among his internationally noted works on theory are the Concentric Sphere Family Environment Theory (CSFET) in 2005; the Family Care/Caring Theory (FCCT) in 2013 and the Family Belief Systems Theory (FBST) in 2018, among others, which have found acceptance and are in use in various countries. He has been a recipient of funding for more than 40 research projects. He is an expert in computer science.

He was named a Transcultural Nursing Scholar by the Transcultural Nursing Society in 2014. In 2015 he received the Innovative Contribution to Family Nursing Award from the International Family Nursing Association. In 2016 he was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) by the American Academy of Nursing (AAN). Among numerous other certifications, he has qualified as a Caritas Coach. He was ordained as a priest (Buddhist appellation: Takuetsu) in the Koyasan Shingon Sect of Buddhism in 2021.

Among his international activities, he has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the International Family Nursing Association; as an editorial board member of the Journal of Transcultural Nursing; as an Editorial Advisory Board of the International Journal for Human Caring; as an editorial board member of the International Journal of Nursing Sciences; as an editorial board member of the Journal of Holistic Nursing; as an editorial board member of the International Journal of Indonesian National Nurses Association; as an editorial board member of the Japan Journal of Nursing Science; as the Editor-in Chief of the Journal of International Nursing Research; as a Chairperson at the 35th International Association for Human Caring Conference; and as a Chairperson at the Transcultural Nursing Society Conference in Japan 2020, among others. In Japan, he has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Japanese Association for Research in Family Nursing; as a member of the Board of Directors of the Japan Society of Nursing Research; as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Japan Society of Nursing Research; as a member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Cultural Nursing Studies; and as a Trustee for the Japanese Society of Child Health Nursing, among others. Through his involvement in various academic activities in Japan and abroad, he continues to promote international exchanges.

He has also been involved in the authorship and publication of over 100 works, including “New family health care nursing: Theory, practice and research” (2010 by Medical Friend Sha in Japan), and published over 100 original articles, including “Development of the Concentric Sphere Family Environment Model and companion tools for culturally congruent family assessment” (Journal of Transcultural Nursing, 2011). Is involved in the development and production of various health-related products, including a CD (“Medical sounds: Healing environment sounds and noise”) and “Medical essential oils.”

Among his hobbies and pursuits are heavy metal band activities, auto racing, photography and programming. His personal motto is “Life is a struggle against oneself. So win the struggle against oneself!” Although he feels he has not been imbued with worldly values, he has always strived to live a life of honesty and truth.
